A Brief Biography of Henk Courtz

Henk Courtz was born in Vollenhove on the 2nd day of February, in 1956. He attended primary and secondary school in Steenwijk. In 1974, he became a student of the Classical Languages Greek and Latin, at Groningen University, and received an MA degree and a teacher’s certificate in 1981. He taught Greek and Latin at a secondary school for a year, but left this job to become Greek editor for the publishing company ‘In de Ruimte’, in Soest, which intended to publish a multi-volumed study bible, including a Greek text of the New Testament, an interlinear translation, a critical apparatus, a Greek - Dutch dictionary, and a Greek - Dutch concordance, the last volume of which was indeed published in 2004.

Dr. Courtz's interest in linguistics was fueled by attending courses organized by SIL and others by the Free University of Amsterdam and Leiden University, in the eighties and early nineties. In 1993, he moved to Suriname, and participated in the Carib Bible Translation Project, which work resulted in the publication of a Carib translation of the New Testament in 2003. In 2002, he returned to the Netherlands, and continued his work on the Carib language, resulting in “A Carib grammar and dictionary”.
